erin

For this paper, I watched the movie Erin Brockovich because it represents numerous social problems. This movie was about a single mother who is trying to raise three young children, while trying to hold down a good job. She also had a very hard time finding adequate daycare for her children. One day, Erin Brockovich was filing papers at a lawyer's office when she came across this real estate document. This real estate document said that Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) was going to buy this family's house to build freeway ramp to their company. For some reason, this document intrigued Erin, and so she went to investigate it. She went and talked to the family whose house was in the process of being bought by PG&E and this family had numerous medical problems. Erin went and investigated some water documents about PG&E, and what she uncovered was a massive water contamination cover-up. This family had no idea that their illnesses were the result of water contamination or even that their illnesses had anything in common. PG&E paid them to see a doctor, and PG&E paid the doctor to say that their illnesses had nothing in common. In fact, all these illness were caused by Hexavalent poising. PG&E used Hexavalent Chromium to cool

This movie has two main topics of discussion, single parenting and environmental

This movie is trying to teach us a few things about single parenting and the environment. For single parenting, this movie is trying to show that it is not easy raising children and holding down a full-time job at the same time. It shows that being a single parent is not as easy as it may seem. This movie also tries to teach us that finding adequate daycare can be a battle in its own way. I have learned sociologically that single parenting is a nation-wide problem. I saw how Erin struggled finically throughout the movie. I learned that it is not easy to balance a full-time job and raise young children without any help. On the subject of environment, this movie is trying to teach us that many corporations are intentionally polluting the environment, and do not always get caught. This movie is also showing that the many Corporations do not follow the anti-pollution laws because the EPA does little, if anything, to enforce these laws. This movie is also teaching us as consumers to very weary of Corporate Pollution because it is very prevalent. I learned sociologically that big Corporations are polluting at the expense of every living being in the United States. In addition, I learned that many Corporations do not care about the environment or the people they could be affecting if it costs the Corporation money to not pollute. An example of this is the movie is when PG&E was given the clean up and abatement order. Instead of paying to have the holding ponds cleaned up, they simply covered it with dirt. Another example is their continual use of Hexavalent Chromium even though they knew it was a dangerous chemical. It would have costed them money to switch to a different form of Chromium. Therefore, instead of switching chemicals, they just lied to the community about the Chromium type they were using.

The movie Erin Brockovich had numerous social problems in it. The two main social problems were about single parenting and environmental pollution. This movie was based on a true story, and I found this movie to be very interesting. I feel it
